As part of the College of the Arts at UL Lafayette's 30th Anniversary programming, we have organized a special Alumni Exhibition for Fall 2024. Alumni are invited to submit artwork to be considered for the juried exhibition. We are thrilled to announce that Bradley Sumrall, Curator of the Collection for the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, will be the exhibition juror. The exhibition will be held in the Fletcher Hall Gallery. The exhibition is open to all UL Lafayette Alumni regardless of your graduating major.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions are due by August 18, 2024. There is $25 entry fee for up to 3 entries. All forms of media will be considered, installation-ready (with installation instructions where necessary), safe for visitors, and no larger than 72” in any direction. Selected artists will be notified by August 23, 2024. Shipping and delivery is the responsibility of the artist. Each artist selected will be required to fill out a loan agreement form. Each artist may submit up to three works for consideration. All submissions must be original work.

  • Please include high-quality images of the artwork in JPG, PNG, or PDF format for review. Submissions must not exceed the resolution of 300 dpi and a length greater than 1500 pixels in any one direction.
  • Moving-image submissions should be accompanied by a link to view the work online (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
  • There is a 72” limitation for submissions.
  • Please include the title, medium and dimensions when submitting.

About the Juror

Sumrall

Bradley Sumrall is Curator of the Collection for the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, where he is involved in building, researching, and interpreting the nation’s most comprehensive collection of art of the American South. A native of Mississippi, he currently lives in the Historic Faubourg Tremé of New Orleans. He has written extensively on the art and culture of the American South, and has served as curator for over seventy museum exhibitions, including The Whole Drum Will Sound: Women in Southern Abstraction, Michael Meads: Bent not Broken, Well Suited: The Costumes of Alonzo Wilson, The Created World of Enrique Alferez, From Terra to Verde: The Art of Sharon Kopriva, Benny Andrews: Paintings and Entwined: Ritual Wrapping and Binding in Contemporary Southern Art. His exhibitions have been reviewed in Art in America, Art Forum, Hyperallergic, Terremoto Magazine and Art & Antiques among other online and print publications. His books include One World, Two Artists: John Alexander and Walter Anderson, From Terra to Verde: The Art of Sharon Kopriva, Michel Varisco: Shifting, and Clementine Hunter: A Sketchbook. His writings have been included in several museum publications including: Southern Accent from the Speed Museum of Art, Spiritual Journeys from the Hilliard Museum and Found: Vernacular Art and Gee’s Bend Quilts at the Gadsden Museum.

Notification

Selected artists will be notified via email by no later than August 23rd. Artists whose work is selected for the exhibition will receive instructions regarding delivery of their artwork. All works must be hand-delivered or shipped and received by September 5, 2024 to the following address:

Dates/Schedule of Events

  • August 18: Submission Deadline
  • August 23: Notification of Acceptance
  • September 5: Deadline for receive accepted work.
  • September 11: Exhibition opens.
  • November 8: Homecoming week closing reception Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM
  • November 12 - 15: Pick up of works

Presentation & Installation

All entries must have a completed entry label attached to the back or base and be display ready at the time of submission. Students are responsible for the presentation of their entries and are asked to make the most professional presentation possible. Professionally presented works have a greater chance of acceptance; works submitted in ill-fitting or poorly crafted frames, mats or mounts may not be accepted. Please confer with your major/minor professor(s) for guidance.

Works on Paper: Framed works, securely fitted with picture cord or wire are preferred. Unframed works should be presented with a neutral white window mat and/ or mounted on a foam board backing and covered with plexiglas where appropriate. No color mats or glass will be accepted. Unframed or loose works accepted for exhibition must be accompanied by a method of installation using the most appropriate means available.

Works on Canvas: Framed paintings mounted on stretcher bars are preferred. Unframed paintings on canvas should be mounted on stretcher bars where possible; otherwise, they should have visible means for hanging.

Large-Scale Works: Works 30" or larger in any direction may be presented without frame, window mat or backing board. Large-scale works must have the visible means and precise instructions for hanging.

3-D Works:  3-D works accepted for inclusion will be displayed on a pedestal or on the floor, as deemed appropriate.

Time-Based Media:  All time-based entries, such as animations or videos, may be submitted on a flash drive or and must be formatted to play on the computer in the Fletcher Hall Gallery Accepted time-based works will be displayed on a continuous loop during open hours.
